Need guide to set up RAID 10 in Freenas 8.3

I think that the odds are in favor of you not needing to go to back-up. But, for greater peace of mind, you could do test runs of restoring data from your back-ups and document the process before you put the system into live use.
Yeah I think you're right. Never a bad idea to test and doc backup.
I think I'm good as long as I don't have a failure on the pair of mirrored drives... on either side of the strip.

It's just odd that no one has a clear answer here. Why can't someone just say when you extend the volume do you choose "mirror" or "stripe" ? or does it not matter ?

If your goal is to create a RAID 10 setup, you choose "mirror" in step 2. It does matter quite a bit.

Correct you choose mirror to keep your redundancy. If you choose stripe all protection is lost.

does this volume status look right?
I've heard that some people do a mirror then later add another mirror.
I just set it up in one fell swoop.

If you want striped mirrors then yes it's OK ;)
