Hello,

Freenas 9.2.1.8 64bit
we build an freenas with these hardware:
- Motherboard Supermicro X9SAE-V
- CPU Int Xeon E3-1220L v2 2200 1155 TRAY
- ECC RAM
- ADAPTEC HBA 6805H SATA/SAS

We have installed the system on an USBstick. But from the internal sataconnectors only one of them work. The Adaptec controller does not work. But at bootprocess all disk are accessable from the system, so what is the problem here?

For test we booted an Ubuntulive, and everything works fine. Then we tested a nas4free and all internal connectors works fine, but the Adaptec controller does alos not work on nas4free.

Thanks for help.
Regards boospy

Adaptecs should not ever be used with FreeNAS. Please search the forums for "Adaptec" for all of the reasons why, then look at our stickies for a recommended controller.

The manual makes it very clear that RAID controllers are not recommended and should not be used. ;)

This is not an Raidcontroller. Only an SATA controller. And here is a list that supports a lot of from this manufacture from Freebsd: https://www.freebsd.org/relnotes/CURRENT/hardware/support.html

So you mean Adaptec generally is not a good choice. Maybe we are able to send the controller back, and buy the right one.

Edit: We found this: https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/hardware-recommendations-read-this-first.23069/
So, we should buy one IBM ServerRaid M1015? But this is not in the official list: https://www.freebsd.org/releases/9.2R/hardware.html#support

Thanks for help

I don't have experience with your exact controller, but I don't know of any Adaptec that is a good idea. They won't let you do SMART and such.

The M1015 is on the list. The M1015 is a rebranded SAS2008 chip, which is definitely on there. ;)

To clarify, what's known to work best are LSI's SAS 2008 and 2308 controllers. The former is found in cards such as the IBM M1015 and M1115 and LSI SAS 9211 Series, the latter in such motherboards as the Supermicro X10SL7-F and such cards as the LSI SAS 9217 Series (among many others). The M1015 is typically the cheapest.

Hello, hello :)

thanks for the information. So i know what the best is.

And the other problem in my first post, that freenas 9.2 only see the hardisk from the first internal sataport? I've testet freenas 9.3 beta an 10 alpha, and the on board controller work nomaly. Also freenas 9.1 work normaly with internal controller, only 9.2 (actually version) show me only the harddisk on the first sataport.

Maybe you can give for this problem also some help. The thing is, wie would like to build one freenas hardware that work perfectly, then we should rollout this hardware to all us customers, and terminate qnap.

Thanks a lot and regards

To be honest, I don't really care about that problem because you have a bigger problem; SMART doesn't work. So it's already well past the point of "find a replacement controller". I have no doubt that once you get an M1015 you'll find that it "just works" like you had hoped and expected the Adaptec would do.

Don't even think of deploying something for business use without careful research. If you can't afford to research yourself, ixSystems may have something for you.

I think he was talking about only one of the SATA connections on the MB working, nothing to do (probably) with the Adaptec card. This seems odd, what does the MB use?
