That was my first build which has since been decommissioned when I began
to rack mount my stuff. That Define R4 now houses my personal desktop.
See, I have a rack, but not a lot of space, behind it. Therefore I can't run a full depth server case.

So I plan on just throwing a standard pc case on the floor next to the rack despite having adequate rack room. (Unless you have a suggestion for a rack case 25 inches or less deep that isn't 300+ dollars that will hold 8 drives.

I would by something rack
mounted cause at some future point you will get a bigger rack frame or cabinet and
then be wishing you had a chassis instead of a tower. Can you find 3U space to mount it
if the depth is shallow enough?

The link is to the place I purchased my SM 16bay from, it was packed with extream care and clean as a whistle inside and out. The vendor will be able
to provide trays at a reasonable cost. Your PSU is included so i see a savings
of 240.00 off your original list...

Be warned that these chassis can be loud, so if noise is a concern...

Nope! That rack I pictured is in a storage closet, with dedicated air vents, and a solid wood door in my finished basement.
That's sweet, is that floor ceramic tiles?

Thanks guys. I will certainly use the intel stock cooler.

I still have two questions

1). Does the LSI SAS 9207-8i card default IT mode, or will I have to flash it to IT mode?

2). Will the components that I picked out work with FreeNAS

Motherboard

Supermicro X11SSM-F-O

CPU

Intel Xeon E3-1230 v5

RAM

2x Crucial 16GB MTA18ASF2G72AZ-2G1A1

Boot Device

SanDisk SSD PLUS 120GB

Storage

6x Western Digital 4Tb 5400Rpm 64Mb

Power

SeaSonic 650W Power Supply X650 SS-650KM3

HBA Card

LSI LOGIC SAS 9207-8i Storage Controller LSI00301

Case

Fractal Design Define R5 White

X11SSM supports 8 Sata ports. Skip the HBA if you just want six drives and a boot drive!

One day, if you want to add more drives, then buy an HBA.

It's actually a product called Quickstep LVT (luxury vinyl tile) sense it's in the basement I wanted something waterproof, and tile is cold on the feet. This vinyl is installed just like hardwoods. So it's neat stuff.
