Hi all,

Is it possible to move my FreeNAS zpool to a new mobo/cpu/memory setup without losing data? I, in the past, created my FreeNAS build as a soft-of experiment and want to make it a little bit more serious and robust. Now that data reliability matters to me a lot more i want to build a system with ECC and some higher-end server parts.

Can you point me to some documentation that discusses this type of change?

Thank you!!

Thanks Dusan. I'm going to have to use a completely different USB, right? I can't just plug in the live-usb that i have in my current system?

You can use the current USB. You may need to reconfigure your network interfaces after the HW swap, but if you used a simple DHCP setup it may just work without any modifications.

Hi all, just wanted to verify. I'm about to pull the trigger on this setup.

You'll need to use a URL link to that, but we'd probably prefer the text list:

Pentium G3220
Supermicro X10SL7-F-O
Kingston 2x8GB ECC

Warning on that last bit, we've had multiple reports of compatibility issues with those Kingston DIMMs.

Thanks for the advice HoneyBadger. Any recommendations on other ECC RAM?

Would this be okay? http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=D38GE1600S

I'm seeing these as well:
PNY 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 ECC Server Memory Model MD16384KD3-1333-ECC
Crucial 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) ECC Registered Server Memory Model CT2K8G3ERSLD41339

The SuperMicro site has these 8GB modules explicitly listed as compatible with that board (click Tested Memory List on the right of this page)

MEM-DR380L-HL01-EU16 Hynix HMT41GU7MFR8C-PB Hynix H5TQ4G83MFR 2 RoHS Low Profile

MEM-DR380L-SL01-EU16 Samsung M391B1G73BH0-CK0 Samsung K4B4G0846B-HCK0 2 RoHS Low Profile

MEM-DR380L-HL02-EU16 Hynix HMT41GU7AFR8A-PB Hynix H5TC4G83AFR 2 RoHS Low Profile

MEM-DR380L-SL02-EU16 Samsung M391B1G73QH0-YK0 Samsung K4B4G0846Q-HYK0 2 RoHS Low Profile
Micron MT18KSF1G72AZ-1G6E1 Micron D9QBJ 2 RoHS Low Profile

The PNY/Crucial will likely also work, but they aren't specifically called out.

Thanks HoneyBadger, literally just found that memory list on that page, haha. Looks like that Samsung is the most affordable.
