Hi all,

I have the latest FreeNAS build and am looking to move from RAID to ZFS. ATM I have 4 drives attached to a Perc 6 and would like to connect them directly to the motherboard (a Gigabtye Sniper 3 with Marvell controller) to take advantage of ZFS. ESXI is running on the server, with the Perc passed through to the FreeNAS VM.

Is there a way to do this without loosing data? If not all my data is backed up, so I can just plug them in and see. Will FreeNAS even detect my drives using the Marvell controller?

No, you will lose all the data. You will need to export the pool using the GUI, power down, move the drive connections to the MB, and then realize it is impossible to pass the drives into the FreeNAS vm reliably.

That's probably more due to the controller being a Marvell than the difficulty of passing thru a SATA controller. SATA controllers can sometimes be passed through just fine (works on X9SCL, doesn't work on X10SRW, etc., depends on how implemented).
