Motherboard Failure

There is fault tolerance build into NAS, but what happens if the motherboard is the only one that fails? If another motherboard is swapped in, can the data scattered in these disks be recovered?

Assuming it was a self-contained problem, definitely.

All bets are off if the SATA controller starts writing random garbage to all devices. Fortunately, this is a purely hypothetical scenario, as far as we've seen. Unfortunately, I can think of a few more similar hypothetical scenarios. Fortunately, there's no need to worry about them too much.

Just so that it's absolutely clear, OP:

If you took your drives from your ZFS pool, and you brought it to my house, and you plugged it in to my freenas, I would be able to mount those drives no problem and use the pool.

So yes, swapping out a motherboard is a non-thing.

Thanks, that is great to know that these ZFS formatted drives would be universally recognized by the same operating system.
