Hi all,

Looking to get some feedback on my Zpool setup

I'm in the process of setting up a new FreeNAS build and i have two sets of drives to use
-6 x 2TB WD RE4 64mb 7200rpm
-4 x 2TB WD RED 64mb 5400rpm

I had two ideas for config
1.
Zpool 1 7.3TB
6x 2TB RE4s RaidZ2
Zpool 2 = 3.6TB
4x 2TB REDs RaidZ2 + Encryption

2. (Not sure if mixing the drives is a good idea)

10x 2TB Mix RaidZ2 + Encryption

Has anybody got any thoughts on mixing drives with different speeds
Also if anybody else can recommend a better setup that would be great

Cheers.

Avoid encryption unless you really know what you're doing--there are some non-intuitive ways it can bite you. If you mix drives with different speeds, the speed of the slower drives is likely to control your throughput. I don't see 7200 rpm drives recommended much here, though, due to their increased power consumption and heat output. Other than the possible performance limit, though, there really isn't a problem with combining them all into a single pool.
