matchname failed

In a WORKGROUP environment without DNS server the FreeNAS-9.2.1.6-RELEASE-x64 screen is littered with matchname failed messages, as SAMBA tries to resolve client host names and IP addresses.

Are these errors safe to ignore, or is working DNS a requirement?

Unchecking the "Hostnames lookups" CIFS service option stopped the errors. I hope there are no adverse effects.

You could also put your host names in your DNS server, which would also fix the problems... :)

Sorry, "problem" in this case being the lack of DNS assigned to that IP address.. At $dayjob, it's a problem when something isn't properly registered in forward and reverse DNS.
In this context, the "problem" would just be the noise from the messages in the logs.

I have been seeing this message on a macbook. Some computers are fine and some others not. I guess the set up or firewall on the machine is blocking resolution of its hostname
