I have an old Lenovo T500 duo core 2.53Ghz with the latest bios from Lenovo installed and ensured the SD slot is enabled in the bios. I use this system to testing purposes.
I have an SD memory card installed in the slot. I boot up the Freenas installer but it does not recognize the SD slot. I had Fedora Linux installed previously and the SD slot was recognized. So I am assuming that the Freenas UNIX used does not support SD cards and the system being old enough that it is not going to be bothered with and that is understandable.

But I just wanted to make sure there was not something I was missing.

Might not be supported but even if it did you shouldn't install the os on sd card. A USB drive is best and I bet your system doesn't meet the minimum specifications to even run freenas.

Order a couple of these USB Cruzer Fit flash drives to install to. You don't need the newer version so stick to the usb2.0 ones. Need 8GB at least but I simply order the 16GB versions. In stock more often to ship quicker and a bit more useful.
