Without information about the use-case and the storage side (disks, vdev layout), there is really not much to say.

The board you linked is not a server board, but for workstations. Since it already has 8 SATA ports, do you rellay need a separate HBA?

Sorry, Home use as a NAS for VM backups and long term storage, some moderate usage and low IO.

Basically I want to move to ECC and use more "rugged" hardware than the current gamer motherboard setup.

As for the 8 ports, the server case has 15 bays so why not use them all I thought :P

That's a rather good selection of parts. Purists would want a motherboard with a BMC for installation and remote administration (IPMI), e.g. a Supermicro X11SCH-F or AsRockRack E3C246D4U (+variants).

But one item can be cost optimised: If 4 cores are enough, get a Core i3-9100 instead of the Xeon E-2234. Up to this generation, i3 supports ECC! The iGPU will be of use to install on a motherboard without a BMC.

A GPU, or a BMC (provides a VGA output), or swapping in any old GPU you may have in a drawer. Or plugging in a serial console ;)
Anyway a Core i3-9xxx saves you $200 over a Xeon E-22x4(G) for similar performance.

GPU just to install it,
the installing it isn't as much of a problem as when you need to troubleshoot it, and it's buried in a closet or rack or in the garage with no monitor or keyboard or open power neaby that you will kick yourself for not having it. just the ability to power it off or on remotely is f(^*%&^(%^ amazing.

I took your advice guys, solid points. I have an i3 coming. BMC isnt that valuable because its rack mounted and easily accessible, I have a good setup for KVM.

On a side note, anyone know if I need to do anything to this 9300 HBA once it arrives? Do I need to flash anything?

probably not "need" to. its usually advised not to flash uncessarily, though if the firmware is particularly old, that can be a "need".
