Running FreeNAS 11

on a Dell 610 with:
96GB Memory
2 3.33 GHz Six-core proccessors
Asmedia 106X SATA Controller Ver 3.30a AHCI Mode

with a 8 bay JBOD attached (no raid function ability or enabled)
8 4TB 7200RPM Enterprise grade drives
to the SATA Controller

Got this server up and running and attached the JBOD via SATA with no issues so I created a RaidZ1 pool from the 8 drives and attached it to a VM on a different server and everything was working. Decided now that I had it all working to clean up wiring and attach power strip to wall behind servers so I shut down both the R610 and the R710 where my VMs are on ESXi 6.5 and organized the power cables and moved the power strip. Now when I boot up I am not seeing my JBOD pool in FreeNAS at all.

When the 610 boots the bios on the server sees the JBOD and reads all 8 drives and their serials perfectly and I get drive activity lights on the JBOD no problem. When it goes to boot into FreeNAS it cycles through the hardware and when it hits the SATA Controller I get the following error a few times then I dont see any activity light on the JBOD anymore...

CAM status: Unrecoverable Host Bus Adapter Error

When I get into the command line in FreeNAS literally NO command I've found will even show the pool or the missing JBOD as being attached, active, etc...

So I am stumped here as the controller is obviously still good if the BIOS can read the drive serials perfectly and I'm guessing the JBOD is healthy too since if it was a single drive failed I would at least see the other 7 in FreeNAS so I am looking for guru advice here.

Thanks in advance!

What is this JBOD you speak of? It sounds to me like one of those god-awful things that use SATA port multipliers.

@Ericloewe, I agree.

Checking out the ASmedia SATA controller card, it appears to have 2 internal SATA ports and 2 eSATA ports. Thus, zero chance of wiring up 8 individual drives without a SATA port multiplier in the mix.

@ortoch, please supply us with a model for the JBOD, and if possible, a link to the product on the manufacturer web site.

Not to mention that the SATA controller is pretty dubious in its own right

Here is the JBOD enclosure...

http://www.mediasonic.ca/product.php?id=1357290761

Here is the exact sata card it has two internal ports and two external but is pinned so only two can be active at once by changing the card pins.

http://www.vantecusa.com/products_d..._name=Serial+ATA&pt_id=4&pt_name=Add-on+Cards

I understand these arent the creme de la creme of home storage parts but I was on a budget (diapers are expensive when you have 3 kids under 3 lol).

This setup WAS working perfectly for about a week before I shut everything down so if nothing more than getting me up and running and then suggesting a direction to go in for HW improvement to this setup would be appreciated. Or I can start another thread but I would at least like to get the JBOD up so I can migrate the data off in the coming weeks to something better if possible.

I did find this post that almost sounded like the perfect fix for me but unfortunately I had the exact same problem trying to set the mount point for my specific JBOD where it needs to at least see part of it where in my and the OPs case it can not. Not sure if this is the right direction here but I got real excited when I found this post till I tried it and it failed to work.

Some more info my digging today discovered is that S.M.A.R.T is not running on my FreeNas server anymore and I cant start it (see attached screenshot of CLI output) Also I did check /usr/local/etc/smartd.conf and it is indeed empty just a flagged header in there...

I understand these arent the creme de la creme of home storage parts but I was on a budget (diapers are expensive when you have 3 kids under 3 lol).
The problem is that these parts are not even close to being usable. Some might call them a scam, even. They're a waste of money that brings nothing to the table other than pain and lost data.

The good news is that the drives should be readable when connected directly to the system, including the SATA controller you have (you wouldn't want to use it long-term, but it will work in a pinch).

So what do I do short term to get this JBOD up and running and what is the long term solution here for me that doesnt break the bank? I am very open to change and can still return this JBOD enclosure but I need to know what to do next I'm very new to all this.

I am just looking for something that I can connect to this R610 or even directly to the R710. I have a SATA card and a USB 3.0 card but I have never been able to get USB 3.0 to read this JBOD not sure why. So if you can point me in the right direction for what device works best for enclosing at least 8 drives (more is better I have dozens of these 4TB disks from work).

Why cant FreeNAS see the current JBOD after reboot still is my main question but after I get that figured out I would love for someone to shop with my money to tell me what the least expensive option is to get 8 or more drives up and running to crank out some storage.

Here is the first sign I can see of FreeNAS seeing the JBOD as its seeing the port multiplier on scbus0 through the AHCI sata card...

Ok after running the above commands the 8 4TB drives are available in Import Disk and Volume Manager as though FreeNAS cant recognize them what could be causing this? I have the option to import them and wipe them or create a new volume and wipe them but why cant FreeNAS recognize the ZFS formatting on them?
