Hi guys,

I'm new to the forums so excuse me if I'm in the wrong section.

I got my dad's old Zyxel NSA220plus last week and I don't like it a bit, but there are 2x 1,5 TB WD green's in them so I thought; Maybe I could build my own nas.

First of all, is it useful for me to build one? Or would it be too expensive since I'm planning to use only the 2x 1,5 TB's?
I'm only going to build the NAS to use as TimeMachine, media server and optionally trying to make it accessible form outside my home network.

My other option would be a Synology DS216se, around €140,- at the moment.

The price for my build will also be around this amount, hence the question:
Build a FreeNas (which is way more fun) or go for the simple option and buy a NAS case.

I hope I've informed you enough!

Greetings,

JP

If you think you can get away with a decent FreeNAS build for that amount of money, you should just buy the Synology, because that dream is about to get real expensive.
