All I want to do is serve uncompressed Blu Ray ISO's to my Pivos AIOS media streamer http://www.pivosgroup.com/aios.html. Don't need it to much else. Not even that concerned with speeds to upload to the NAS, just streaming to the media server. Maybe iTunes media server as well would be nice.
I want low power consumption. I understand WOL, but does this mean I can make it so when I turn on my Media streamer my NAS will turn on from it? This would seem to save a lot of power, but don't know if my media streamer can turn it on as I have never seen that function in the media streamer.
I am new to this world of building your own NAS. I originally bought a http://www.buffalotech.com/products...ll-office/linkstation-421e-diskless-enclosure but noticed the processor is not that fast and there is such a little but of RAM (512 is all) , yet it works fine. I paid $165, and it seems to work fine (no stuttering of Blu Ray) so I would like to keep things low cost.
I figured for around the same amount of money, I could build a better, faster serving system. I like learning things so it will let me learn more about NAS and also be part of this community. A lot of the sample builds on here seem to do more than I want to do. So I am asking what I should get that I won't outgrow for my basic needs (in my mind)
I read some articles on this and someone suggested an Asus C60M1-I MB porcessor combo because its passive and low power. It doesn't seem to be available anymore. Looking for a good value priced replacement. I see a lot of cases with built in 300w power supplies built in. Micro center has this one http://microcenter.com/product/3991...ctor_Computer_Case_with_300_Watt_Power_Supply
In Summary I am looking for:

In Summary I am looking for:
- cost around $165 (can be a little more if its a lot better)
- Outperform the Buffalo NAS I listed above
- Low power consumption
- How much RAM do I really need if the BUffal only had 512 and works OK?
- Handle at least 2 HDD (not going to RAID)
