Hi all,

After many readings for building a NAS Home made, I decided to stick with FreeNAS, mostly because of the ZFS support.
Because I'm fed up with my Synology DS414... Too slow... Too limited... Too... everything!

I bought used units for building it:
  • Case Fractal Design Node 804 (brand new this one)
  • Motherboard ASRock E3C224D4I-14S (mini-ITX / socket LGA1150 / Intel C224 / DDR3 ECC)
  • Processor Intel Xeon E3-1220v3
  • 2 x Hynix PC3L-12800E CL11 4GB (DDR3L-1600 MHz) so 8GB
After the reading of the needed hardware, I decided to buy additional 2 x Samsung PC3L-12800E CL11 8GB (DDR3L-1600 MHz)
Thus now, I have 24GB of RAM. It should be enough :)

I foresee to install FreeNAS on 2 USB sticks mirrored (Kingston DataTraveler Elite G2 DTEG2/32GB)
Then jails, VM and Docker will be stored on 480GB SSD.
I foresee 2 x SSD 1 To mirrored for everyday documents and very important stuffs...
Then HDD for media storage such as movie, music, apps and games.
I do not know yet what is best:
1 zpool with a strip of 2 x (3 x 4TB in RAIDZ1) or 2 zpools with 3 x 4TB in RAIDZ1.
Or 1 zpool with 6 x 4TB in RAIDZ2.
For optimizing storage, I hope it is safe to have 4 x 4TB in RAIDZ1? Or should I have to 8 x 4TB in RAIDZ3?

Last thinking: I would like to encrypt the documents but it seems that the encryption is only handled at zpool level, not a dataset level?
Because I would like to encrypt only a dataset with admninastrative works
