I'm a (semi) longtime lurker who's been learning everything I can before I make the jump to FreeNAS from my QNAP. While the QNAP is a fine product that has served (ha) me well, right after I purchased it I started learning about ZFS, the math behind the move away from RAID5, and started moving toward setting up a home lab to learn networking and infosec. I wish I had invested in a FreeNAS box instead of the QNAP.
Anyway, I have hardware on the way finally for an ESXI 6.5 server running a FreeNAS VM (or maybe on bare metal since FreeNAS 10 appears to have much improved VM implementation):
Supermicro MBD-X10SDV-TLN4F
2x16 GB Crucial ECC RDIMMs
4x 4TB WD Reds
2x 4TB Seagate NAS
1x 525 GB Crucial MX300 SATA SSD
LSI 9211-8i HBA
Norco S8-ITX case (kinda rolling the dice here)
FSP 350W 1U PSU
Thank you everyone here for all the invaluable knowledge you've passed on.
