Dear Forum
My father passed on a broken FreeNas System to me a couple of years ago. It has 3 Disks that form a Raid 5 system and are in an unconsistent state.

What I do remember is that Freenas was rebuilding the Raid set (which took a good 24h, but then was still not able to access the data.

I've put a lot of hours in this including trying to fix it with third party tools and I would like to take a fresh start now - a good 5 years later.
But where to start?

Is it worth upgrading from 8.3 to the most recent version and then try again? Or has so much changed since that this is not a good idea?

Are there some best practices for fixing broken raid systems with freenas?

The system is using an Intel Atom which (I believe) already supports 64Bit.

Or would it maybe be a good idea to use a fresh boot medium with an up to date freenas version and add the Raid system and let Freenas work out if it can be recovered?

Put hardware info in your signature.
can you show us zpool status?
we need to find out if the pool is toast or if you are able to replace a disk.
If its possible back up the config.
I would recommend updating to 11.7U
third party tools

Well, seeing as how it's early FreeNAS, it's not necessarily ZFS-based. That might make it easier or harder, depending.

I do believe it is ZFS though,
I will try and set the system running now and try to gather the zpool status. The config should be safe, I copied the content of the boot usb medium to a safe location and now we will see if the syste comes up again and what the pool status looks like.

I got the system up and running again and now a little more:

It is actually: FreeNAS 0.7.1 (revision 5024) i386-embedded; INTEL D945GLF2 Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU 330 @ 1.60GHz 1014MiB RAM

The raid5 is currently rebuilding (which will take an other day maybe)
There is no ZFS Pool at all
The mount point is: Hardisk: /dev/raid5/raidp1 Filesystem: ufs Staus: OK

GEOM raid5Geom name: raid
State: REBUILDING CALM
Status: Total=3, Online=3

So I guess I will sit and wait till the RAID is rebuilt and then I will see what comes next.

You're in the wrong forums, then. FreeNAS 0.7.1 is a *completely* different product. Around 2011, iXsystems bought the rights to the name "FreeNAS", creating a brand new product.

The product previously known as "FreeNAS 0.7" became known as "NAS4Free". You will need to ask over there for more information, sorry.

[Moderator note: Thread moved to Off-Topic as FreeNAS 0.7.1 is not related to iXsystems FreeNAS - perhaps someone can be of help anyways]

...and is now known as XigmaNAS, in case searches for "NAS4Free" come up dry.
