Hello!

I'm getting a little nervous I've lost my data. I built my NAS in early June and have been using it without problems until tonight.

I was accessing files on a CIFS share - opening some, deleting some, nothing heavy. All of a sudden, the share became unresponsive. When I turned on the monitor for the NAS, I noticed that it had rebooted and halted at a screen with a prompt that just said db>. I had encountered this before when attempting to upgrade to FreeNAS 11.0-U2 through the web GUI. I rebooted, and using the boot menu, used the previous environment.

It boots up and gets all the way to the console setup and I can use the web GUI, but while it's booting I notice the message "cannot import ATLAS : no such pool available". When I go to to the Storage tab, the ATLAS volume is there, but the status is unknown.

I searched the forum and tried zpool import ATLAS, but I receive the same 'no such pool available' error.

I've included the debug, output of dmesg, and zpool status. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
monte

I'm at work now, but I did run that command last night and there was no output at all. It simply returned to the prompt on the next line with no output. As soon as I get back, I will run again and post the output.

Ok - I'm back home and ready to troubleshoot this bad boy. Here's the output from 'zpool import':

Code:
[root@freenas ~]# zpool import
[root@freenas ~]#

zpool status please

Also try

zpool scrub freenas-boot please

Then zpool status Again

And your system specs, and what you believe your pool layout is.

FWIW, it seems six HDs were recognized.

Strange.

The zpool import should've said *something*

Have you tried restarting again.

I've restarted several times - no luck. I shut it down for most of the day today and just restarted it when I got home from work. I've rebooted twice since I've been home with no luck.

I do still have the upgraded FreeNAS 11.0-U2 boot option available. For some reason, that environment never fully boots. Maybe it can give some information about what is causing this.

I'm totally open to other ideas though - I'm stuck!

How about a "Verify Install" on the System, Update, tab? A fresh install?

I just booted in to the FreeNAS 11.0-U2 environment and it looks like it was able to import the pool. It fully booted and got to the console setup menu, but the network interface doesn't seem to have configured. I do have link aggregation set up. I'm going to try and get the network up and see if this fixes things.

Ok - I deleted the lagg interface and finally got it to grab an IP. Now when I log into the web GUI, it's all messed up. Mostly just a blank white screen. My CIFS shares aren't up either.

If I go to the shell in the console and do zpool status:

Code:
  pool: ATLAS
 state: ONLINE
  scan: none requested
config:

	NAME STATE READ WRITE CKSUM
	ATLAS ONLINE 0 0 0

How about a "Verify Install" on the System, Update, tab? A fresh install?

I booted back into my previous install and I am running "Verify Install". All files verified successfully. I rebooted, and it WORKED!

It went back to trying the lagg0 interface, so I had to set that up quickly, but once I did, it answered and the volume is there and it is all good!

Thank you ALL (m0nkey, stux, and Redcoat) for your support and ideas. I really appreciate it.

I'm going to get to work on my backup strategy now. This was too close for comfort. My problem is that the NAS far exceeds my storage on other devices. Going to have to get a tape backup or something.

I also realized that I never set my own passphrase for these drives. I am doing that immediately.

Are there any other suggestions for a very lucky noob that almost lost everything?

Don't use encryption.

The best way to backup a large NAS is to another one ;)

Failing that, backup the stuff that needs backing up.

Another economical backup strategy is just buying a larger USB external drive and attaching that your computer, then backing up through shares. Not the best, but certainly one of the most economical.

Yeah, this. That also explains why zpool import didn't return anything--the encryption operates at the disk level, so until the disks are unlocked, ZFS can't see that there's a pool out there waiting to be imported.

Edit: And if you're going to use encryption, make triple sure that your keys are backed up.

Never back up to one or other propriety format. No matter what software I use for backups, my first demand is that I can connect the backup drives to another device that supports the file system so I can read the files without any special tools. So no exotic compression, no exotic containers etc. By the way I bought 4 external USB drives after I figured out that they contained regular WD drives. They were a far bit cheaper then the same drives separate! Not kidding! The model was running out and replaced with the next shiny model. I just cracked the housings open and put the disks in a small OVM server I use for backup. Excellent Rsync partner for my Freenas box.
