After a couple years of lurking and researching through the forums I recently took the plunge and built my first FreeNAS server to replace an aging Synology DS1512+ which was primarily used for backup storage and as a plex server.

Basic details of the build:
  • Define R5
  • 8x4TB drives, RAIDZ2 (4 WD Red, 4 Seagate)
  • 64GB SSD for the boot drive
  • Supermicro X11SSM-F
  • 16GB RAM (planning to upgrade to 32GB at some point)
  • i3-6300
  • LSI 9211-8i
  • Seasonic Focus Gold 650FX
Completed the burn in over the past couple weeks and am now moving the system into a production mode. Lots to learn but so far everything has gone smoothly.
