I will soon be building a NAS for my home network, primarily for backup but I may also use it for serving my flac/WebM content.

I currently have a Windows 7 laptop that backs up to a Seagate NAS, a Linux laptop and a Linux desktop, both of which I backup to locally connected drives.

The Seagate NAS worries me because it is just a single disk. If it goes bad and my laptop is lost or damaged or whatever, it will be a pain.

I'm also hoping that since FreeNAS is *BSD that I can ssh in and play rogue and adventure. Yes I know there are linux ports, but...

Anyway I'll be building a PC for this and I am still in research phase.
So here I am.

Alice,

Welcome to the forum!

FreeNAS has a GUI to manage it, but one can enable SSH and do things under the hood.

See this thread regarding hardware suggestions. Also read cbyerjock's guide for an explanation about vdev, zpool, etc.
