Hi. My name is Carlos and I've been debating about building my own FreeNAS for several months. I currently have an LGNAS that works ok but doesnt have the power I'm wanting so I'm considering a FreeNAS build.

Here's what I'm thinking so far. Feel free to make recommendations.

Case: Fractal Node 804
MoBo: X10SLM-F or X10SLL (thoughts?)
CPU: Pentium G3240.
HDD: I have several WD Blacks
RAM: Crucial PC3-12800 DDR3 ECC

Let me know what you think. Thanks for all your help

It's ok. Crucially, you didn't list the PSU. The general recommendation is the Seasonic G-Series (G-450 for most people).

You might want to include the boot device(s) on the list, too. A pair of good USB flash drives works well.

Regarding the RAM, be sure to get the model that has been validated by Supermicro.

Thx. As for a PSU I was going to get a corsair 500 but I'll checkout the seasonic.

I was going to order one 16gb Kingston use but I can order two.

By ok, what changes would you recommend that wouldn't make the cost double?

Thx again.

There's nothing really to change. You should go with 16GB of RAM, if possible, but there's no reason to mess with the build.

Assuming you mean something like a Corsair CX500, it would work, but it's a bit on the crummy side. The extra efficiency from an 80+ Gold PSU would also help in a server.

The choice of motherboard depends on the features you might want. The X10SLL-F and X10SLM-F are very similar and they're different from the X10SLL+-F and X10SLM+-F. Any of these (or the other X10 boards) would work fine.
