Hi.
Should a GUI upgrade from 9.2.1.8 to 9.3 beta work?
I attempted it and got into a boot loop.

I just upgraded one of my 2 servers from 9.2.1.8 to 9.3-BETA and the upgrade seems to be performed OK.
You need to wait a while though.. it takes some time before it comes back up..
I cannot verify through the WebGUI yet as I'm getting:
Code:
400 Bad Request

The plain HTTP request was sent to HTTPS port
nginx/1.6.2

whenever I try to access it either through:
192.168.1.251
192.168.1.251:2001
https://192.168.1.251:2001

I'm not sure what exactly is going on but hope to find out with some searching :)

please do not hijack my thread, my situation is totally different. my machine is in a boot loop(confirmed via iLO) and doesnt even respond to ping.

Didn't mean to hijack.. Just informed you that I did the same update and didn't get a bootloop.
I can't say the upgrade went without a hitch as that would be lying.. so I added the info about the error I got in case other people look at this thread..

just to let you know that manually setting the protocol to http fixes my issue.

It seems the upgrade went fine and my settings are kept.

To give complete info in case someone needs it:
Open /data/freenas-v1.db in SQLite3 and perform following query
Code:
UPDATE system_settings SET stg_guiprotocol = "http"

a reboot will cause FreeNAS to load the settings again.

Good luck though with your bootloop..

Forum rules dictate you give us some more information, like system hardware and configuration. If by chance you are running on some VM platform (and I'm not saying you are), things might not work well.

Can anybody confirm that upgrading from the GUI is possible and officially recommended for versions prior to 9.3?
To cite the upcoming user guide http://doc.freenas.org/9.3/freenas.html#upgrading :

upgrades from previous versions of FreeNAS® to version 9.3 are not possible as the boot filesystem has changed from UFS to ZFS. To move from a previous version to 9.3, follow the Initial Preparation steps then perform an installation as described in Performing the Installation.

I would have interpreted this as doing a clean install (in accordance to the user guide)
and then importing my previously saved settings (maybe this should be added in the user guide, haven't found this step)

with all due respect, system configuration is irrelevant here.
i've tried this on 3 different machines:
hp dl360 G7, 16GB,
a supermicro SOHO server based on x8sil mobo with 16GB RAM
and a freshly installed vm (esxi 5.1 host on another supermicro server)
i've asked a simple question: "Should GUI upgrade work?" and was expecting a simple yes or no answer.

AFAIK, it doesnt work at the moment( a few ppl on this forum confirm the same).
Maybe this fact should be a sticky for now, until resolved ;)

my webgui upgrade from 9.2.1.8 did not succeed. However, my iso upgrade method succeeded without a major glitch, except for a url redirect issue I have already reported.

The documentation is terribly, horribly wrong. We absolutely support GUI upgrading from earlier versions of FreeNAS (in fact, we went to a lot of trouble to make that work!). Thanks for pointing that out. I've asked our docs person to correct that bit of misinformation immediately. Thanks.

Boot loop just happened to me as well going from 9.2.1.8 on the web gui. Guess I will try the ISO upgrade method.

EDIT:
Just did the iso method and it worked. Upgrade worked fine all plugins working. I'm excited.

My GUI upgrade from 9.2.1.8 to 9.3 worked without a hitch -- except for the "upgrade zfs pool" issue which I've commented on another thread.

The upgrade process is VERY slow so patience is required. Also, I like the new patch system but it is also VERY SLOW. Well, at least on my little machine.
