Greetings,
Recently, I received the following critical alert from my server:

Device: /dev/ada0, Self-Test Log error count increased from 0 to 1

I have four drives (all Western Digital Red 4TB drives) in a RAIDZ1 pool. I've been running this server about a year now. Is this something that I need to be concerned about? If so, what do I need to do about it? Replace the drive? Does this mean the drive is failing? I would've expected more than one year's life from it.

In case anyone's interested, I'm running FreeNAS 9.3 and my hardware is a Dell PowerEdge T110 II tower server. I have 16 GB of ECC RAM.

Regards,
Geoffrey

Can you post the output of smartctl -a /dev/ada0 between code tags please?

Yes what is the status of smart. Drives can have mechanical failures at any point, so I yeah isn't anything to worry about. If it is bad just warranty it.

Yep you've got some minor problems.

Can we see a smartctl -x instead of smartctl -a for this drive please?

Why -x ?

But yep, you can definitely RMA it.

Now it seems this drive has been a bit too hot in the past, that's maybe why it has failed this soon. Or maybe it's just infant mortality.

The -x gives more insight into temperature history, and other things. Multi-zone error rate, which shows on his attribute list as non-zero, is one of the things that crops up sometimes after a long run with thermal stress.

Ok, but smartctl -l scttemp should give all the temp infos needed without all the other things (yeah, I don't like -x because it's just too long and messy :P)

You're being ridiculous. Let the user send the extended information. If he doesn't and we need something, then we have to send him back to get more info.

By the way, there's no reason to be running extended tests anywhere near that frequently.
+1. Weekly is plenty; every two weeks is even fine. Every 12 hours or less is just overkill.

I didn't realize that it was running that frequently. I'll change it to once a week. I've also requested an RMA with the manufacturer.

Make sure, once you replace the drive, that the SMART tests are still set for the new drive. I'm not sure if this has been fixed, but at least for a while, they wouldn't be.

Wasteful and detrimental to the drives' longevity.

No, that's the delay between SMART values reads to see if everything is ok, not the delay between SMART tests.
