There are some great deals on my local craigslist for Dell servers.

For $200, I can get a PowerEdge 1800 with dual Xeon 3 Ghz. (4GB RAM, but I can add 2 more; max 12GB)

I can fit 6 drives in there with a SATA card.

Is this a good machine for FreeNAS?

There's also a PowerEdge 700 with a 2.8 Ghz cpu for $180 ...

Thanks!

The Dell Poweredge 1800 use DDR2 and the Xeons have EMT64 (64bit)
The Dell Poweredge 700 use DDR and the P4 socket 478 is only 32 bit
The Poweredge 1800 is a good box (but high power consumption) for FN8, the Poweredge 700 not

Getting a Sun with similar specs to the PE1800 tomorrow, going to try and install FN8 just for the fun of it :) But as said previously, its way to power hungry for a NAS

Got my Sun server today, but it's going to be a bit more trouble upgrading it then I had anticipated. For most parts the didn't use screws but "rivets" (dunno if its the right word, google translate). Still a fun toy to have, and you never have any doubt if its running or not (makes more noise then a vacuum .. lol)
