A co-worker suggested these rack servers as a good starting point for a home NAS build.

Is this overkill, or too old? Does the raid controller possibly bring up an issue?

Hello, I would recommend reading some of the sticky's on this board. There are some great hardware recommendations!

With that said, I would not recommend that hardware nor use it myself. Basically for the following reasons.
1. Too old tech
2. Dual Xeon with low ram, too power hungry
3. 2.5" SAS drives.
4. Dubious raid card

If you are looking for some great tech to buy from Ebay, look at some of Chris Moore posts.
Personally I'm using a simple supermicro 1u for testing, but could also be a good starting off server.

Ok, so I have updated my build significantly, and was able to piece together a pretty nice server for a great price.

Dell R720 Dual E5 - 2620 (looking to get a deal on some 26xx V2 to upgrade if this cant handle the transcoding 4k with plex)
Memory Installed 32gig 8 x 4
Hard Drives TBD I am open to suggestions I was thinking 6 2tb drives with 1 or 2 SLOG SSDs?
Drive Bays 8 drive bays
Riser Board 2 x Riser Board with 2x PCI-e G2 x8 Slots Per Riser Board
Power Supply Dual Platinum 720W PS
Backplane Backplane for 8 x 2.5" SAS or SATA Drives
Ethernet Dell 2 Port gigabit / 2 port sfp+ (I have access to 1 gig copper sfps at work for free)
RAID Controller Dell H310 6Gbps SAS HBA w/ LSI 9211-8i P20 IT Mode for ZFS FreeNAS unRAID
Remote Access Card Dell iDRAC7 Express Included

It only takes 2.5'' drives and not designed towards storage density. With 2U you should be able to fit in 24 2.5'' or 12 3.5''. And no it cannot transcode 4K. I got a pair of 2690 v2 and it only transcode one 4K stream, somehow.
