Freenas and a bunch of errors

Hey, hope someone can help me out.

Last week I got an error message saying bad sectors so replaced the drive. The resilvering process took over 100 hours. Then after a restart yesterday freenas started resilvering again. So I left it and this morning when I checked. There were now these error messages

1) ada7 2 currently unreadable
(pending) sectors
2) ada5 2 currently unreadable
(pending) sectors
3) ada3 ATA error increased from 4 to
10

Ada3 is the drive I’ve recently replaced.

This is the status log

Then that's your problem.

Oh right, never saw that when I built the machine 6 years ago. So is it a case of scrap everything and start again?

I suggest you check all your drive part numbers - I don't believe that EFAX is older than 2 years or so, maybe less. If you have 6-yrear old Reds I would expect them to be EFRX (which are "good" CMR's). Only SMR drives are a problem and suggested for replacement to avoid the resilvering times issue that you experienced.

After doing a bit of digging around it looks like that’s the problem that the original drives are CMR and the new one is the SMR kind. So I’m guessing that’s the thing that’s causing the clash. I’m going to return the new drive and get a CMR drive, hopefully this solves it. Will update when I get the new ones.

Thanks for the help everyone

If you want to stick with WD, you need to get a Red Plus ( which is CMR).
