Will not run upgrade from CD

Hi,

I'm trying to upgrade from the iso burnt to a cd but it just sits at the spinning cursor after finding the boot loader. I have left it for over an hour and it still does not progress.

Any ideas what might be stopping it?

Cheers

Same problem here...

Code:
Building the boot loader arguments
Looking up /BOOT/Loader... File not found
Looking up /boot/loader... Found
<spinning cursor>

Hi,
I upgrades from 8r6929-i386.
smart still does not work. Would be great to see how fortyhands managed to set it up including the mail. I looked at possible configurations without luck. (My installation started with 8.0 and from this point on I did the GUI upgrades)
Test Mail works using the GUI. But I do not get any smartd mails.
Attached are the logs. Would be great to hear what to do.

Worked for me, the web upgrade. Also from BETA3 amd64. It took a while though.

How long is a while? I waited like 15minutes the first time, 2 1/2 hours the second time... then I waited a full 24 hours. Still says "Please wait".

I also tried the direct method using the following commands:

xz -cd /mnt/Storage/Downloads/FreeNAS-8.0.1-BETA4-amd64-GUI_Upgrade.xz | /root/update && touch /data/need-update && reboot
or
xz -cd /mnt/Storage/Downloads/FreeNAS-8.0.1-BETA4-amd64-GUI_Upgrade.xz | sh /root/update && touch /data/need-update && reboot

I get:

dd: /dev/ada4s1: short write on character device
dd: /dev/ada4s1: end of device
953600+0 records in
3724+1 records out
488194560 bytes transferred in 20.723322 secs (23557736 bytes/sec)

Then no reboot... it just sits there. If I manually reboot and I check the version, it's still at BETA3

EDIT: I just started getting low space errors in the footer.

Hi,

sharing with CIFS let me "Allow empty passwords". With authentication model "Local User" I want to add a user with empty password. The System won't let me.

To the dev team: Please allow to add users with empty passwords.

Thanks in advance

binarypower, which version are you upgrading from? Your df output shows that your FreeNAS partition is only 512MB. If it was beta3 it would be 1024MB. You can't do the in-place upgrade because the partition size doubled in size at beta3, as the release notes say. Moving from beta2 or earlier to beta3 or beta4 requires a re-install, not an upgrade.

Beta4 Boot problems compared to GA

Hey All,

I have created a 4GB USB boot key with v8.0.1Beta4 installed, when I try to boot from this key, the sequence reaches a certain point and then the machine reboots. This compared to 8.0.1GA which reaches the same point, pauses for a second and then continues to boot.

I captured both the Beta4 and GA boot sequences on video (iPhone so please excuse the poor quality!).

Any help would be appreciated please.

FreeNAS8.0.1-Beta4 Bootup = https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B8...YTkzMy00ZGY0LTk5YWItM2ZmOTg0MGY4NDZj&hl=en_US
FreeNAS8.0GA Bootup = https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B8...OWMzYS00YTk0LTg4ZTUtN2NlNWVjMWIxODBj&hl=en_US

Thanks,
Andy

It looks like you have quite a few USB devices attached in the video where the boot is OK. Are they still connected? Because the video where it crashes looks like it's just about to scan for USB devices. Have you tried booting with nothing but the USB stick FreeNAS is installed on and the internal drives?

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your reply. The only 3 USB devices are:
  • 1TB Lacie Drive
  • 8GB HP USB Key (FreeNAS8.0GA) or 4GB USB Key (FreeNAS8.0.1-Beta4)
  • MS Keyboard dongle

I've tried booting the system with only the USB key in (HDD's removed) and that did not work for Beta4 (or Beta3 for that matter).

To capture the 2 videos, I simply removed 1 key (Beta4) and inserted the other (8.0GA)... Im wondering if something more fundamental has changed in the background of the FreeNAS OS...?

Cheers,
Andy

Thanks Paul. I did the complete upgrade and it's working perfectly now.

At some point after the 8.0 release, USB3 support was added to the FreeNAS kernel. This might be your issue. There are other people on the forum who haven't had any problems with the USB3 support, and there are others who have a similar (though perhaps not identical) board to you. Can you try turning off USB3 support in the BIOS? Otherwise I would suggest filing a bug at support.freenas.org.

Hey Paul,

After logging a bug at support.freenas.org I was advised (just before your post) to turn of USB3.0 in my BIOS, I did this and can confirm Beta 4 now boot 100% ok

I've asked on my support ticket if there is any way for me to test some other usb3.0 drivers to assist with resolving the issue.

Cheers,
Andy

Just FYI, I'm using an Asus P6X58D-E also with USB3 ports and have no problem booting with the USB3 support enabled. Also BETA4.

Hi Jim,

From my support ticket...
USB3 does work on Intel chipsets, which is why we added it to the build  the xhci driver apparently has issues with AMD, though. Being this is a brand-new chipset and board it probably needs some developer time to sort out.

Im happy with my USB3.0 turned off for now as I dont have any USB devices just yet. Hopefully this issue will be resolved for AMD based chipsets by the time I buy a USB3 device :)

Ahh Zacate chipset, didn't see that to being with! Thanks for the update.

Service On/Off not working

The Service On/Off icons do not appear to work if you turn them on, I get a missing graphic. However, other services are ON and their graphics are working fine.

Also, when will a webserver be available? Can anybody help me add a url.alias to lighthttpd so I can share out a directory to my ROKU and stream my .MKV video files via Roksbox? I've tried, but Django complains that it is not a valid URL.

You need to clean your browser cookies and cache, then you'll see icons again.
