It is version 9.10.xx just renamed to FreeNAS 11.

Good decision btw.

I got a centos vm deployed and connected over vnc so it's pretty close to functional.

It was really easy.

Create a zvol.
Download iso of choice to FreeNAS.
Add zvol as disk storage to vm
Create vm selecting the iso
Connect to IP and port using a vnc client.

Looking good so far....with the exception of there being no clear way to be able to auto-start these VMs

So a separate volume, not dataset, is needed to make this work?
Yes, have you tried yet? The VM GUI asks you for a zvol if you don't give it one it doesn't work.

I figured that's what it was when I tried it briefly, I just wanted to make sure I was thinking correctly.

Sound easy but .. where do you download to the iso to and from where/which part of the menu do you select the iso?

If you click on the VM there will be a "Devices" button at the bottom. From there you can add other devices, including a CDROM (iso).

Any suggestions on how to make the VMs auto start?

Not really, there is a feature request to make it work but meanwhile you could add a Init script with the following shell command:

midclt call vm.query | jq '.[].id' | while read r; do midclt call vm.start $r; done;
