Force high CPU usage

Hello everybody,

My server (running on a Ryzen 5 of 1st gen) is incredibly slow even with ridiculous operations like ls in a directory of 10 text files, which takes sometimes more than 20 seconds (100 MB/s on the drive via SMB)

But the CPU usage never significantly go higher than 0.05%.

Is there a way to correct that ?

Thanks!

Hey Papillon,

(using a French word as a name... I also speak French should you need...)

So No, we can not help you correct that. At least, not from that post.

You have to give us all the details about the setup :
Hardware, drives, config, usage statistics and more.

To know what you already tried by yourself would also help. SMB is shitty at best. Do you have the same latency when doing that ls from FreeNAS command line ?

Hello, sorry for the delay..

Yes, I'm french too!

The config :
Ryzen 5 1500X
ASUS A320
Drive : 1 x 4 TB WD Red (for the moment)
8 Go DDR4

Usage stats : In attached picture

I also used "top" to see the CPU usage for every running program.
I know SMB is not pretty good but it demonstrates that the drive can handle r/w operations with a correct speed for this model, so it's not the disk speed that cause the delay.
I can't try the ls command from the sever command line, no PCI graphical card installed (nor needed) and no integrated graphics chipset in the CPU. So I've only SSH and web interface to control the server.

And that's probably your problem right here.... Almost certain this drive is SMR. Confirm the exact model and if it is SMR, you will have to replace it with a CMR drive like Seagate IronWolf.
