Hi all,

I'm building a home server that will primarily function as a NAS storing all of the family's important data. Additioanlly, it will run a number of services (likely in separate jails):
* NextCloud
* OpenHAB (Smart home hub)
* MariaDB to support above
* Ubiquity UniFi controller (to manage my network)

Additionally, it will likely function as a build server to build packages for my Raspberry Pi's and potentially as a media server.

I'm planning the following:
* Case: Fractal Design Define Mini
* PSU: SeaSonic G-450
* Motherboard: SUPERMICRO X11SSH-F
* Memory: Crucial 32gb kit 2 x 16gb ddr4 2133 ecc udimm
* CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1240V5 box
* Boot disk: 1 x Samsung 850 Evo 250 GB
* Data pool (raidz2): 5 x WD Red 2 TB

Any input is very appreciated!

Thanks,
Troels

Looks as though your proposed system ought to work...

Why use 5 x 2TB drives? In a RAIDZ2 configuration, that only gives you the capacity of 3 drives, i.e., ~6TB. Why not just buy 2 x 6TB drives and set them up in a mirror? You'd get roughly the same capacity using only 2 drives instead of 5.

Well, it'd have to be a three-way mirror to be as reliable.

Still, 2 TB is small and the 3 TB drives are actually the best TB/$ ratio so you may want to buy those instead ;)

And 4TB drives are the cheapest when you factor in bay cost ;)

Hi! I'm getting the same motherboard. Did the ram work out for you?
