First Freenas build

I am planning on using my computer that I built last year for my Freenas because I just don't have the money in my budget to build another computer. I need to know if it will work for what I want to do. I am going to use it for storing media such as movies, family pics and movies but want to have a back up of all the data in the same box. Also how would I set this up to do this? and do I have to go by the hardware compatibility list?
