Anyone know if in the new 9.1, they put a check in place when you create file extents in a pool, that it doesn't over extend the actual size of the dataset? In 8.3.1, when you create a file extent and it is bigger than the available space in a storage pool, it still lets you create it and you won't know you did something wrong until VM's in that file extent start doing crazy things like data corruption, etc.

No, because the issue is time based. Just because you have the disk space now doesn't mean you will tomorrow or next week. Just like you might not have the space right now but you will next week when some data is deleted.

The only true solution for your problem is to monitor your zpool and don't try to overprovision your server by a large margin. The automatic nightly emails do give you stats on disk usage, so unless you start moving large quantities of data you should have plenty of time to expand your zpool(or free up server space).
