OK, then can someone recommend a usb drive that will not crap out after a year.
Hard to do so. The general recommendation is to get something from a good brand (SanDisk, Toshiba, Corsair...) and have a few spares lying around.

You can also get a SATA DOM, if you can find a place for it. Those tend to be better.

With 9.3, you'll also be able to make good use of larger boot drives and even mirror boot drives, so feel free to buy stuff in the 8-16GB range (or go crazy with 32GB).

I've been using a Corsair Voyager (as well as 5 friends use it) and had no failures with 1-2.5 years of use for each setup.
