Hey All.

I would like to upgrade my RAID-1 mirror I have in my freenas system that contains 2x 1TB GB hard drives for 2 larger hard drives. Possibly upgrading to 2 x 6TB or 2 x 4TB in a Raid 1.

How would I go about doing this?

I have had a look at the manual and found this:
Most I have looked at: http://doc.freenas.org/9.3/freenas_storage.html#replacing-drives-to-grow-a-zfs-pool

Is this the easiest method? Also, anyone have a simple guide in document format or a video tutorial?

Thanks.

Yes, that section of the manual is the best answer. I don't know how it could be further simplified. Edit: Were there parts you found confusing, or wanted clarification on?

We encourage people to use the term "mirror" rather than "RAID1" as "RAID1" isn't ZFS terminology and may even be mistaken for RAIDZ1.

@danb35 's answer is correct, but I will point out that for the specific case of a mirror, ZFS allows the addition of new devices to a mirror, making a three-way (or even four-way) mirror. You can add the larger hard drive as an additional mirror of/in the existing vdev. This is extra work, but if the data is particularly valuable it might be worth it.

Also: Note that you should use the manual for your version of FreeNAS. If you're using FreeNAS 9.10, use the link at the top of the page:

And you could expand by adding a mirrored pair to your existing mirrored pair.

If your case supports 4 drives, I'd consider this option.

In the future (or when one fails) you replace the 1TB drive with still bigger drives.
