I've just tried to replace a Seagate 1TB drive with a WD red 1TB HDD. I decide to follow the directions given by the FreeNAS Team in this You Tube clip...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8bvtj-LQ_A&list=PLgKBSCAcGA57juSDNE09bc7Ub491DIFVj

during the process I got this in the shell....

There was nothing wrong with any of the HDDs, Dataset or the volume that I set up. Scrubs and short and long SMARTs have been enabled. I may have a bug issue... and was wondering if these items are related.

But other than that I just wanted to replace the Seagate with a WD Red to match the remaining 5 WD reds running in my ZFS Z2 configuration.

I have no data stored stored on this NAS box as I'm just experimenting and learning about FreeNAS and using it as a learning tool so if the worst came to the worst then I could do a complete re-install.

Well... its a little embarrassing really... I made a fundamental error which was not reading the FreeNAS 9.3 release notes along side listening to that You Tube clip. Not that the you tube clip was wrong... it was spot on.
I was reading through the release notes in bed that evening and it states that I have to replace the old HDD with the new one between taking the old one off line and pressing the "replace" button. The Shell read out above is what happens when you leave the original HDD as part of your volume and click on the "replace" button. FreeNAS is looking for that new drive that hasn't been inserted yet.

This has been a good learning process for me and what this has taught me is that all newbies should spend time getting to know how this FreeNAS functions prior to using it in a proper production environment. Don't jump in there and think that you can use FreeNAS straight off as a newbie... your gona get caught out somewhere along the line. The good news is I have since replaced the offline Seagate 7200rpm HDD and replaced it with a new WD Red 5400rpm HDD, and its re-silvering lovely ;)
