Disk in mirror throws write errors, SMART results seem fine

I had been running a 2 x 3TB (both WD Red) mirrored pool in a HP Proliant Gen8 up until a month or so ago when one of the disks died (genuine SMART confirmed death) after nearly 5 years of constant use. After some reasearch I replaced the disk with a 4tb WD Red, on the understanding that the pool would stay as 3TB until I upgraded the other disk to a 4TB (fine with me). However, since I installed the new disk, it has been throwing write errors and faulting at least once a week. On a reboot the disk is resilvered and all is fine until it happens again eventually. I have tried removing and reseating the drive, cleaned the connections on the backplane, tried the drive in the other bays, but it keeps happening.

Here are the results of long SMART tests which seem fine to me, can anyone spot anything of concern?

Is there a chance that combing a new 4tb drive with the older 3tb is causing problems? Here is the SMART output for the old healthy drive:

Your ada1 actually reported a fault:

Code:
SMART Error Log Version: 1
ATA Error Count: 1
        CR = Command Register [HEX]
        FR = Features Register [HEX]
        SC = Sector Count Register [HEX]
        SN = Sector Number Register [HEX]
        CL = Cylinder Low Register [HEX]
        CH = Cylinder High Register [HEX]
        DH = Device/Head Register [HEX]
        DC = Device Command Register [HEX]
        ER = Error register [HEX]
        ST = Status register [HEX]
Powered_Up_Time is measured from power on, and printed as
DDd+hh:mm:SS.sss where DD=days, hh=hours, mm=minutes,
SS=sec, and sss=millisec. It "wraps" after 49.710 days.

Error 1 occurred at disk power-on lifetime: 928 hours (38 days + 16 hours)
  When the command that caused the error occurred, the device was active or idle.

  After command completion occurred, registers were:
  ER ST SC SN CL CH DH
  -- -- -- -- -- -- --
  04 61 00 00 00 00 40

  Commands leading to the command that caused the error were:
  CR FR SC SN CL CH DH DC Powered_Up_Time Command/Feature_Name
  -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --  ----------------  --------------------
  e3 00 00 00 00 00 40 08      00:05:00.793  IDLE
  2f 00 01 10 00 00 00 08      00:04:21.130  READ LOG EXT
  2f 00 01 10 00 00 00 08      00:04:21.126  READ LOG EXT

Note the values of the ER (error register), ST (status register), and DH (device/head register) are all non-zero. This indicates a head starting to fail, which matches your pool faults.

I would replace this drive under warranty.

Right ok, thank you for that. I did wonder about those errors but assumed it would fail SMART if it was a critical problem. Obviously I need to read up more on that! Thank you for your help, I'll get on with the RMA. Did not expect a drive to start failing after 1 month :/
