I did a clean install of FreeNAS Corral and while trying to recreate my shares I accidentally deleted my Volume. Deciding that I didn't like the new GUI I did a fresh install of FreeNAS 9.10. Tired to import the volume but it didn't show up. I went to the console and did the command "zpool import -D" as I had read online that this can recover your volume. It showed up and said that I had to run it as -f as it had previously been accessed on a different device. I ran "zpool import -D -f MassStorage". It didn't import and now it won't show up anywhere.

Any advise as while most of the data is recoverable not all is.

Thanks

Hello there,

Oh that looks bad...
can you post between code tags the actual output of the commands you ran on your system ?
Also, all disks are still connected ?

no. i shut the system down to avoid writing anything else to the disks (and to stop myself messing around and making it more irrecoverable) . when i ran the first command it worked perfectly showing me the pool and said that since it had been accessed on a previous system (the corral system) I had to run it as -f to force it to import.

How much time between the destroy and the shutdown? Was the pool optimized at creation time for 4K/AF disks?

Did you delete one thing, or did you somehow destroy the entire pool? -D is for importing destroyed pools, not a destroyed dataset.

what if you try zpool import -o readonly=on -f MassStorage ?

I hadn't really optimised it for anything as i'm a total noob to this sort of thing. Its a 3 drive raidz1 array made up of WD reds that I built out of old hardware when my WD MyCloud ran out of performance. As for how long between destruction and shutdown. Probaly no more than 10 minutes.

When I run zpool import -o readonly=on -f MassStorage it comes back with "cannot import 'MassStorage': a pool with that name is already created/imported, and no additional pools with that name were found".

So your pool is online already :)
can you go into /mnt/MassStorage and list content?

If I go ls /mnt/MassStorage I get "No such file or directory", and if I do ls /mnt I get "md_size"

Do a zfs list If your item is listed there, you are in better shape probably. If your item is gone, you need to do a zpool export -f MassStorage and then re-do the readonly version above. However, at this point, the odds of rewind working to recover a deleted dataset are going to be low.

If that is the scenario, also post zpool history -il MassStorage | tail -n100 Be sure to put it in a Code bracket.

I lied. It now shows up in /mnt along with all the data sets inside. Still can't see it from the gui though

I would try a reboot at this point. If it doesn't show up after that, someone else will have to assist, or you may want to start a new thread in General Questions asking about datasets not appearing in GUI.

Thanks for the help guys. I've been able to create a new volume, dataset and share, with an old drive i have lying around. This has let me copy the media of the ZFS pool through command line on to something I can access from my desktop to recover the data from. I've already been able to recover the most precious (and irrecoverable) bits and am now starting on the rest. Much thanks you've saved me no end of trouble with this.

THANK YOU!!! :):):)

New drive ordered to act as backup only and it may be time to resurrect the MyCloud as 3rd source.
