I'm trying to learn Freenas 9.2.1.9 before investing in building a unit. I have an old Athlon 64 bit chip in an
EPoX EP-9NPA+Ultra 939 with 3x 1 TB WD Black HDDs in ZPS1 with 3 Gigs of RAM (I know I need more but MB only accepts 4 so need a new machine).
AMD Athlon 1333 Thunderbird 1.333GHz

I want to use windows backup to backup my desktop to the Freenas to learn how to use it set permissions which I find confusing. I can from explorer access the backup directory in the Freenas (copied files to it). When I run Windows Backup and tell it to write files to the \\FREENAS\Backup\ it asks for a user name and password. I tried the one I'm using for the backup user but it doesn't work. Here are some screen shots to show it. I appologize that I couldn't figure out how to post the images without the dropbox links. Thanks for the help.

All your links point to the same screenshot.

If you can connect to the share with Windows Explorer then Windows Backup should be able to connect to it with the same credentials.

Some suggestions:
  1. Set the permissions to Windows instead of Unix.
  2. Did you try leaving the credentials blank in Windows Backup?
  3. If #2 doesn't work, set a password on the Backup user. Maybe Windows Backup doesn't like writing to a location that allows Guest access.

Thanks Robert. I changed the dataset permission to windows and it still didn't work. I try to run backup to a local disk and it also didn't work. Went to the windows start menu and typed services and found the windows backup properties and changed the startup from disabled to manual. Now the backup is working thanks for your help
