cannot create snapshot out of space

since yesterday I got the following email every hour:

Hello,
Snapshot SSD128gb@auto-20190112.1301-2w failed with the following error: cannot create snapshot 'SSD128gb/VM/win7/win7@auto-20190112.1301-2w': out of space no snapshots were created

No pool or dataset should have less than 20% of space. Could it be a bug or am I just wrong?

CTRL + C should work.

Since the pools themselves have free space, it's probably a quota or something. zfs list will guide you.

This is going to be extremely painful for you unless you use SSH. Once that is going, you'll need to use zfs list -o space to get the space details.

Bah, forgot the quota:
zfs list -o space,quota

If that doesn't show anything useful, you'll have to try other more specific quotas and probably just list them all.

No quotas at all? I just checked the man page and the other quotas don't apply to snapshots, so something is rather wrong with your pool. Is the pool healthy? When was it last scrubbed?

         The minimum amount of space guaranteed to a dataset, not including
         its descendents. When the amount of space used is below this value,
         the dataset is treated as if it were taking up the amount of space
         specified by refreservation.  The refreservation reservation is
         accounted for in the parent datasets' space used, and counts against
         the parent datasets' quotas and reservations.

         If refreservation is set, a snapshot is only allowed if there is
         enough free pool space outside of this reservation to accommodate the
         current number of "referenced" bytes in the dataset.

         This property can also be referred to by its shortened column name,
         refreserv.

So they blurred together in my mind. That said, it's not a quota, so it wouldn't matter here (reservations show up as used space on the parent).

Quotas and Reservations are fairly intricate and I definitely don't remember the details off the top of my head, so I always check the man page.

refquota does not include snapshots, so I'm out of ideas. File a bug report and maybe the devs can dig deeper.

I deleted one 15gb snapshot, seems now to be okay. I will wait till the next snapshot is taken.

just as background info, the snapshot is from a windows VM that upgraded from 17xx to the latest win 10, probably 18xx

That doesn't make any sense to me, all datasets have a ton of available space (relative to the few KB needed for the snapshot, anyway).

If I understand this correctly (big IF) the new snapshot will be over 15Gib becuase I believe it is of a zvol, ZFS has no idea whats in there so it just images the whole thing. the USEDREFRESERV is blocking that space from being used on the ssd so there was not enough usable freespace available to make the 15+ GiB snapshot.

No, there is no "imaging" going on or any diffs or whatever. A snapshot is a block pointer that says "at time index T, this dataset began at the block pointed to by me". Basically, instead of freeing the dataset's old root block as soon as anything changes, it's kept around at the same time as the new ones. It happens at the block layer, so there is no concept of files or zvols or whatever hypothetical type of vdev you can imagine.
