I have been playing with the idea of re-purposing an old laptop that will automatically create a backup of my primary system. Is this possible? If so could someone please provide me with guidance on how to accomplish this?

As @wblock says, replication tasks can do what you say you're looking for, though the odds than an old laptop will be suitable hardware for running FreeNAS are very close to zero.

Agreed. Though I suppose it may be ok to run a backup server on "capable" vs "suitable" in certain cases.
