Can I boot from a 16GB Optane?

Silly question really: Despite all the dire warnings of Intel RST and 7th gen CPU and so on by Intel, can I just use the Optane as an NVMe drive and boot from it?

It's really affordable at 16GB and will last me longer than the "Patriot Scorch" I have now, which appears to, maybe, be on its way out. A little perverse to use an Optane as a boot drive, and: Could I?

As I understand it, it's up to the motherboard.

Since it's a PCIe based storage meduim, if the BIOS can refer to it as a boot option, you're good.
