Best way to copy a lot of files while preserving ownership?

So, I just copied a bunch of files from my FreeNAS box via SSH to a windows machine. I then copied the files back to the FreeNAS box, also via SSH. But now all the files are owned by root:wheel. *headdesk*

I'm fixing the permissions. A couple of people couldn't get to their shares for a short period. No harm done, for the most part. I hope it didn't screw anything up with my windows backups.

In hindsight, how should I have done that? I see an option in WinSCP to change the permissions, but not the ownership.

Nope. I've thought about it more and I'm not sure I even have any good ideas. Maybe if I had AD integration... but that's just speculation on my part.

I think your issue is with the tool you are using (WinSCP). What it does with permissions depends upon its configuration and the protocol you use. See http://winscp.net/eng/docs/protocols for an overview and some of its links for more info.
