I am looking to build my first FreeNAS server (for Plex) nothing fancy, just a starter. For a starting point I am considering the following:
Motherboard: Supermicro MBD-X11SCL-F-O (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07N8QVK9R/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)
Processor: Intel Core i3-9100F Desktop Processor 4 Core Up to 4.2 GHz without Processor Graphics
(https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07R7Q3JZH/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)
Memory:
Timetec Hynix IC 32GB KIT (2x16GB) DDR4 2400MHz PC4-19200 Unbuffered
(https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07NQ1KW9H/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)
Any thoughts, pro or con, before I continue in this direction for a starter build?
Thanks

I just built my first FreeNAS using the same CPU & board. So far I'm quite happy with the decision. I bought my RAM from Supermicro, got 2x32GB (MEM-DR432L-HL01-EU29). Not much worse then buying multiple 16GB sticks (although I paid $208ea), and if I ever decide to move to a Xeon it'll allow me to go to 128GB. I'm using a Noctua heatsink instead of the included CPU cooler, but that may not have been necessary - I don't have Plex doing any transcoding, and with typically just one stream at any given time, the CPU is pretty much just idling. So, suits me fine, but YMMV.

Thanks for the reply. I was somewhat hinky about my choice of memory (trying to go on the cheap). Will reconsider the memory choice.

I'm usually pretty frugal, but I wanted to build something I could trust to run for a long time, plus I was worried about being able to find the right memory in 3-5yrs, so I just decided to go to the i3's limit now rather than wait.

What's your plan for the rest of the system? Case, storage/boot devices, power supply, etc.? More details might draw some responses from the folks with more experience - I'm quite the novice with FreeNAS myself, but am happy to help where I can.

Alternatively .. me being poor white trash and all .. I acquired an LGA 2011 Chinese knock-off board and 4x16GB cheap DDR3 ECC RDIMMS that has been rock solid and I have up to 8 friends/family watching my Plex at a time .. sharing with 25+ right now. I also run UniFi Controller. Specs in sig

Single 32GB ECC UDIMM from Supermicro for around 200 is my recommendation. Only because troubleshooting memory issues, should they ever develop, is such a major pain in the ass, and not worth the 50 or so you can save up front by buying cheaper memory.

I am running a Plex server with 32GiB and it’s humming along nicely. Plenty of RAM for playing with additional jails and even a VM or two.

"What's your plan for the rest of the system?"

Case (for now): 20 year old A-Open mid tower with lots of fans
Boot: 120GB SSD drive
Data storage:
StarTech.com 4-Bay Mobile Rack Backplane (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00OUSU8MI/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) (fits nicely inside case)
4 x 10GB WD reds (configured RAID-Z1)
Backup Storage: 2 - WD4100 NAS's with 4x3GB WD reds running RAID5 (4 years old - will expand as needed)
PSU: Antec VP 450 (450 watt) PSU
Gigabyte Ethernet

Thanks to all for great info.
