G'day,

Currently running FreeNAS with ZFS RAIDZ-2 (6 x 3TB)... I've have a number of data sets that I would like to backup and after trolling through the forum there are a couple of things I would like to confirm.

1. Local snapshots the way I see it are useful for recovering deleted / changed files over days or months depending on the policy setup. However they are no use in a catastrophic failure (fire / theft / direct lighting bolt.. etc) to restore the dataset... correct?

2. Snapshot replication requires an additional FreeNAS server where snapshots are stored... I believe this method initially mirrors the zpool or dataset and then snapshots are PUSHED to this backup FreeNAS server... Correct? If so, Is a complete restore of a dataset configured this way possible after a catastrophic failure?

3. In the interim I draw the conclusion that the simplest and least expensive method of backup is using rsync and rotating a couple of external drives? (storing one offsite).
