I am trying to setup a NAS using a handful of computer parts (in other words I'm trying to do it with no budget).

When I load FreeNAS 9.10 or when I even begin installation onto a flash drive I get the below errors. I can eventually install FreeNAS, boot FreeNAS and login with my created root password. However, none of my drives appear when I attempt to make a volume. I'm not sure what the problem is since tests have found no problems with the drives.

I've taken pictures of the error message and of system information

Pic 1 - error message
Pics 2-6 - HDD information
Pic 7 - CPU and RAM information

I would be incredibly and passionately thankful for any help that leads to progress in my endeavor to build a NAS from old materials.

@Adam Nieri : please give us specifics about your system per the forum rules. The experts here are unlikely to take the time to try and deduce what you are using from screenshots.

OK, so we're looking at an 8-year-old AMD system. I give you credit for putting 8GB of RAM in it, but most likely it just isn't compatible with FreeNAS 9.10. You might be able to get an older release working, but if you're determined to use this hardware, then FreeNAS probably isn't for you. There are lots of alternatives, mostly based on some flavor of Linux.

Sorry about that, I posted my thread as I was getting ready to head out the door.

I have x2 Seagate 250GB SATA drives and I have x2 WD 80GB SATA drives
Thank you. I believe @Robert Trevellyan is probably correct, and that you ought to consider using another OS.

Thanks for the advice, is there any you would recommend?
FreeBSD, or your favorite among the zillions of Linux distros: I like CentOS because it's stable and well-supported (it's the free version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux).

Basically - whatever OS you can get to run on your hardware.

My preferred Linux is Ubuntu, but I don't know how well the desktop version would work on your hardware. It's easy enough to try.

There are other flavors of Ubuntu for more niche applications. You could try Ubuntu Server, with webmin for management.

Others often recommend Open Media Vault, but I have no experience of that.

You could even try NAS4Free.

EDIT: also, PC-BSD.

Give Koozali SME Server 9.1 a whirl (Based on CentOS). Has Web Interface and you can configure Users, iBays (Think "Shares"), etc. May be along the lines of what you are looking to do.

I also recommend to try NAS4Free on your system. It really has some lower system requirements as minimum.
It could be worth a shot.
