First time building a home NAS, I will be using it to run Plex media server streaming and transcoding at times, Also backup music and documents as well.

Trying to decide which MOBO + CPU combo is best.

ASRock C2550D4I

I don't think that either of the motherboards that you have proposed for the i3 support ECC memory. Start in the server motherboard section at newegg to get ecc as an option.

Notice that we don't recommend that motherboard if you look at the hardware recommendation sticky. 'nuf said.

Forget the low-power processor. It uses the same power idling and won't have the performance headroom when it needs it.

Claiming something is "better" is so relative. The X10 has better on-board hardware, the AsRock has more processing power (8 cores). I mean, there's dozens of things that make them different, and each one is superior in different ways. The real question is which one YOU think is better. That's the one you should get.

The AsRock is actually the 4 core version not the 8 core

Which would have more processing power to transcode videos using plex?

It's hard to tell unless you benchmark them side-by-side.

Expect to transcode 1-2 streams with the i3.

EDIT: the C2550 and the C2750 are on PassMark now, they just appeared.

Core i3-4150: 4995 http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel Core i3-4150 @ 3.50GHz&id=2252

C2550: 2329 http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel Atom C2550 @ 2.40GHz&id=2331

C2750: 3929 http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel Atom C2750 @ 2.40GHz&id=2185

So overall the Core i3 has more power. The C2000s will always win for power efficiency though, it's remarkable they score that high at 14 W and 20 W.

The C2750 boards are quite capable for FreeNAS and I know FreeNAS does very different things than PassMark benchmarking, but it makes for an easy comparison that should be somewhat accurate.
