OK, I could get the following stuff refurbished:

  • 1x SuperMicro X7DBE 1x Intel Xeon Dual-Core 5150 2660Mhz SATA2 2x Gigabit LAN in a case for up to 16 HDDs
  • 8x ATP AP12K72G4BJE6S 4096MB DDRII ECC FB PC667 = 32 GB ECC RAM
  • 1x LSI 3Ware 9550SXU-16ML 16-port SATA Raid Controller PCI-X + 4 Break-out Cables
for a total of € 500.
Would that be
  1. a good deal and
  2. good hardware to run FreeNAS on?

I don't consider that a good deal at all. If it were $300 then maybe.

But for about $100 more you can get the X9 series hardware with 32GB of RAM and an M1015. Far newer stuff and FAR more supported in these parts. Your idle power will certainly be lower, performance will be higher, and compatibility is definitely guaranteed for quite some time.

Ok, let me take back one thing. With the case, it is a decent purchase. It will be a tradeoff between power savings with newer hardware and money saved with the purchase right now.

Yeah, the case is basically making it. Without it, I would go X9 | M1015 | 32 GB no questions asked. But I am still leaning towards the X9, because I see the advantages. I could buy the case alone for € 180, maybe I just gut it and use the newer mb and controller.
