I'm a hobbyist with some experience but a novice at FreeNAS compared to most people here. A short rough user history of my open source appliances would probably be something like this:
1994-1998 NetBSD on Amiga 3000T+Picasso as a workstation and dialup networking using DNetDLink (Matt Dillon's work?)
1997 - 2000 Debian on IPX as firewall to ADSL
2000 - 2006 FreeBSD on a laptop as firewall
2006 - 2012 Mostly D-Link based firewalls with DD-WRT
2007 - 2013 Solaris Express and OpenSolaris experiments using ZFS, zones and crossbow
2013 - 2019 TP-Link based firewalls and routers OpenWRT and DDWRT
2013 - 2019 Ubuntu based home server using ZFS, Samba and tvheadend
2019 - FreeNAS experiments, goal is to migrate from Ubuntu, deploy jails and a couple of virtual machines to replace and enhance the old home server.
Later on I guess I will create some hardware descriptions for at least current hardware.
