9.10.2 U3 showing updates every day

I recently upgraded to the above version and ever since I get a daily email from my box:

A new update is available for the FreeNAS-9.10-STABLE train.

Version: FreeNAS-9.10.2-U3
Changelog:
#23459 Bug Regression SMB slow listing directories with large file numbers.

When I log into the box and go to "Update" it shows pending updates for 9.10.2-U2 which is no longer listed in my boot environment. I click "Apply pending updates" and it thinks for a moment and then says something like "Freenas 9.10.2-U3 is already installed. Please activate 9.10.2-U3 on the boot page and restart".

So I go ahead and check the boot tab and it does indeed show U3 is activated and no sign of U2.

What am I missing here? Am I being dumb?

The issue was that the update did not complete for some reason, that I cannot find in the logs. I can see a couple of places where an exception could happen and not result in clean-up, but it would not tell the calling code that the BE is suitable for booting, so I suspect there are several issues going on.
