Hello,
At home, I recently upgraded my older 11.x setup to the latest 11.2 release and decided to use bigger drives and less of them. Originally I had 8x 3tb drives but swapped them for 4x 8tb drives in a raidz2. I backed up my data to another freenas machine and restored it without problem.
But now I have a bunch of older disks that I'd like to use for less important data/ temp files but have no room in the chassis. I want to keep 2 separate pools (and since the drives are different sizes, I don't think I could stripe the vdevs anyway)
My idea is to get another empty chassis to sit directly next to my existing server, get an ebay LSI 9207-8e card, power supply, and add my existing old used drives in that 2nd machine. I'd go from the back of the LSI to the drives in the 2nd chassis and be no further than 1m away. But how would the power supply I add to the 2nd chassis turn on the drives if my main machine PS is powering the LSI?
I know that this is not an ideal setup, but there are things to consider for me. It's only for home use, my more important data is on the new drives in a separate pool that is backed up, and speed is not a concern (as long as I get in the area of around 50MB/s at least).
I just want to make sure that if they are in a separate pool and something happens to some or all of these 8 old drives, that may main pool will still be ok (hence why I don't want to strip).
Main server: OS, pool1 of 4 drives, power supply, ethernet, LSI card
<Connected via SFF-8087 to SATA (3.3 Feet) to 2nd chassis>
2nd chassis:
8 drives, pool2, power supply only
Thanks
