X11SSH-CTF onboard controller - able to passthrough to FreeNAS?

I have a separate topic posted regarding the build in question, but this is one of my main questions and it seems like I should break it out separately.

Long story short - X11SSH-CTF motherboard (which supports VT-d) - if I put ESXi on the bare metal, and run FreeNAS as a VM, can I passthrough the 8 ports through the onboard LSI 3008 controller to FreeNAS? Or am I stuck using an add-on card still (at which point I'd get the X11SSH-TF instead)

Theoretically yes, but SAS3 stuff isn't quite as tested as SAS2 (though it qualifies as mature enough for most usage), so weird quirks in edge cases are not unexpected. Coupled with it being used on a newer platform (Skylake), you're in somewhat uncharted territories. Or rather, you have a mathematical model that tells you that things should work, but you still have to look out for unmodeled effects.
